With the September 9th release of Lakeshore Entertainment's The Exorcism of Emily Rose coming up, I thought it'd be a good time to take a look at the history of exorcism in the modern horror film. My research revealed something that I really should have figured out sooner -- with few exceptions, every single exorcism film made after 1973 is either a rip-off or blatant cash-in on The Exorcist.
No country put out more of these rip-offs than Italy. The following is just a brief listing of the Italian exorcism films that came in the wake of The Exorcist. This is by no means definitive, and I encourage any oversights to be e-mailed to me through our contact form.

The winner of the 2004 Cannes Special Jury Prize is finally getting a theatrical release in the United States. Oldboy, a psychological tale of revenge and murder, opens on March 25th in New York, LA, Chicago, and San Francisco, gradually expanding to other major cities in the following weeks. Producer Nira Park is up for the The Carl Foreman Award For Special Achievement By a British Director/Producer OR Writer In Their First Feature Film, and the film itself has been nominated for Best British Film.(read more...)

Navi Rawat (who "Angel" fans will recall as the psychotic slayer from the deeply disturbing Season 5 ep "Damage") has signed on to the next Project Greenlight movie Feast. She joins Balthazar Getty, Henry Rollins and Jason Mewes on the project. The film is being executive produced by Wes Craven.
Director Dante Tomaselli (who has recently finished work on The Devil's Playground) has already started preliminary work on his next film, tenatively titled The Ocean. Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp) and Judith O'Dea (Night of the Living Dead) have already committed to the picture, which is about supernatural riptides. Sam Raimi's production outfit Ghost House Pictures (whatever happened to Renaissance, anyway?) is looking to fund a sequel to their recent horror remake hit The Grudge. Stephen Susco, the writer of the previous entry, has been contracted to pen the second film in what may become a franchise. The Grudge is a remake of the 2003 Japanese horror flick Ju-On, and the two films shared the same director, Takashi Shimizu.(read more...)
