Sweet Cthulhu! Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project is "At the Mountains of Madness"

Astounding Stories - At the Mountains of Madness

Guillermo del Toro has been attached to more projects in the past five years than I have fingers, but the one that I've always been most excited to see happen is finally finally coming to pass. Deadline New York reports that del Toro's next movie as director will definitely be an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness for Universal. James Cameron will be a producer on the film, which should come in handy since it will be shot in 3D. Cameras will start rolling next summer after what I'm sure will be a necessarily lengthy preproduction period.(read more...)

New Production Stills from "Hellboy 2"

Hellboy 2 poster

This is only marginally related to the horror genre, but we received new production stills for Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, coming out July 11, 2008. There's some pretty good stuff in here, so we felt obligated to share.(read more...)

Del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness" Charging Ahead?

Astounding Stories - At the Mountains of Madness

According to Latino Review, who received an anonymous tip, director Guillermo del Toro will follow Hellboy 2: The Golden Army with his long-in-gestation adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. LR's source also said Universal was putting up the backing for the film, along with Angry Films (Shoot 'Em Up). In Lovecraft's novella, which debuted as a three-part serial in the pulp magazine Astounding Stories, a scientific expedition to Antartica discovers an ancient city of gods and monsters.(read more...)

Vocal Cameos A-Plenty in "Diary of the Dead"

George A. Romero's new zombie film Diary of the Dead will contain cameos by several recognizable names, but don't look for familiar faces. According to a feature in USA Today, Stephen King, Quentin Tarantino, Simon Pegg, Wes Craven, and Guillermo del Toro will all lend their voices to Diary. Given Romero's focus on media in Diary ("I thought it would be cool to go back to Day 1, when it all starts, and lay media stuff on top," Romero told USA Today), my guess is that we'll be hearing these voices from televisions and radios.

Diary of the Dead makes its world premiere Saturday as part of the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film has no United States distributor yet, but we expect that to change after the premiere.

San Diego Comic-Con International 2006 Report

Comic-Con logo

Yes, the Haunted Newsreel is back for a one-shot look at the news and highlights of San Diego Comic-Con 2006. This week, we'll be looking at Skinwalkers, Grind House, The Reaping, Pan's Labyrinth, The Wicker Man, Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror, and, oh yes, Snakes on a Plane.

The Con:

The 2006 San Diego Comic-Con was held from July 20th to July 23rd at the San Diego Convention Center in sunny Southern California. Each year, tens of thousands attend, and 2006 was no exception. The Fire Marshal actually shut down onsite registration on Saturday because there were simply too many people in the building (online registration had been disabled the previous night).(read more...)
