The big genre news for the Valley of the Sun right now is that at 10:00PM on December 4th, 2008, Chandler Cinemas in Chandler, AZ will be host a special, one-night-only screening of Repo The Genetic Opera with director Darren Lynn Bousman and screenwriter/composer Terrance Zdunich in attendance. Alejandro Jodorowsky Double Feature in Chandler, AZ

If you live in the Phoenix area (as I do), then Chandler Cinemas has an extremely interesting double feature this weekend. On November 21st and 22nd, audiences can experience the bizarro one-two punch of Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo (1970) and Holy Mountain (1973). Update on Twisted Pictures' Remakes of Val Lewton Chillers

It's been nearly a year and a half since news came in about the option that Twisted Pictures (the genre arm of Evolution Entertainment) had picked up to produce remakes of four RKO chillers -- three based on films produced by Val Lewton and one unknown. Up until recently, we had very little news beyond that announcement, but thankfully some more information has come to light. Thansk to Variety.com, the fourth property is now known -- and it is not a Val Lewton film, nor is it horror.(read more...)

First Season of "Tales from the Darkside" Coming to DVD

In 1983, George A. Romero and his business partner Richard Rubinstein launched a horror anthology series entitled Tales from the Darkside. Made for syndication, the show presented a new tale of terror every week for four seasons, eventually making a total of ninety modestly-budgeted episodes. Many of the episodes were based on works by renowned authors like Stephen King, Robert Bloch, and Harlan Ellison. (read more...)

Paramount to Release Uncut DVD of "Friday the 13th"

One of the most-repeated fandom gripes I heard at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival was directed squarely at Paramount -- they won't release the uncut DVDs of the slasher movies that they produced and/or distributed in the 1980s, even when the materials are plainly available.(read more...)

New "Last House on the Left" DVD in 2009

DVD Drive-In reports that MGM will release a Collector's Edition DVD of Wes Craven's controversial 1972 thriller Last House on the Left on February 24, 2009. The new disc will feature a commentary by the lead actors, numerous featurettes, never-before-seen outtakes, and more. Full details are at DVD Drive-In. Last House, ever-so-loosely based on Ingmar Bergman's Virgin Spring, deals with a group of criminals who rape and kill two young women, then receive the violent reprisal of the parents of one of the girls. Midnight Entertainment has recently completed a remake set to be released in March 2009.

PopMatters Presents a Week of "Night of the Living Dead" Essays
