The Fruit Cellar: From Body Horror to Identity Horror

Dead Ringers publicity still

Of his 1988 film Dead Ringers, David Cronenberg said, "It has to do with that element of being human. It has to do with that ineffable sadness that is an element of human existence." This statement is entirely true. His film manages to simultaneously question and confirm the humanity and weaknesses of its central characters; however, Cronenberg's assessment of his own film is surprisingly reductive. Upon closer investigation, Dead Ringers seems to be about so much more. It's a complicated discussion of identity-how we come to understand ourselves, what defines us, and ultimately, what destroys us.(read more...)

Remake Round-up: "The Fly", "The Crazies", "A Nightmare on Elm Street"

Crazies 2010 poster

Three pieces of remake-related news for those interested. First off, apparently Fox's remake of David Cronenberg's The Fly is still happening, according to THR's Risky Business Blog, this time with Cronenberg himself attached as a writer (and possibly as a director). While this is an odd move for Cronenberg, whose seen greater box office success and mainstream acceptance since he switched from horror to crime thrillers, it's not completely befuddling. Cronenberg recently directed Howard Shore's recent opera version of The Fly, which played in Paris and Los Angeles. Maybe he still has insects on the brain.

Universal Remaking "Videodrome" as an "Action Thriller"

Videodrome poster

Universal will remake David Cronenberg's Videodrome, according to this Variety.com article. If you suddenly feel waves of anger coming at you from you computer screen, well, that's me. I'm transmitting my own Videodrome signal. I'm a pretty laidback guy when it comes to the remake machine. I wish they'd stop, but I'd rather occupy my time with the original films. However, when I see a sentence like, "The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the(read more...)

David Cronenberg Week

David Cronenberg on the set of Videodrome

Maybe it was merely coincidence that three of our writers were all working on reviews of films directed by David Cronenberg at the same time, but we could hardly ignore it. If we're thinking about Canada's King of Veneral Horror right now, it's equally likely that you are, too. It's not surprising that he's in our heads right now, since he has a way of sticking there. The myriad of bizarre themes in his films -- the body politic, the melding of man and technology, and the conspiracy of/against society, among others -- are like viruses that subtly infect our brain cells, making residence and changing how we view the world. Even though Cronenberg has moved on to the more Oscar-friendly pastures of the crime drama in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, the legacy of horror he has left in films like Shivers, Videodrome, and The Fly (1986) continue to shock audiences at both the visceral and intellectual levels.(read more...)

Spyglass Entertainment Remaking Cronenberg's "The Brood"

The Brood DVD

David Cronenberg is about to see another one of his films remade. Screenwriter Cory Goodman is set to write a script for a new version of Cronenberg's 1979 horror-thriller The Brood. Spyglass Entertainment will produce the film alongside Clark Peterson (Monster). Dimension Films is already putting together a remake of Scanners, Cronenberg's 1981 science fiction film, with Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II and III) attached to direct.(read more...)
