Nominations for the Eight Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards were announced last night on the rondoaward.com website and the Classic Horror Film Board. The purpose of the Rondos is to recognize "the best in monster research, creativity and film preservation." Classic-Horror.com is proud to be a nominee in the category of Best Website. To celebrate the 122nd birthday of horror legend Boris Karloff, the blog Frankensteinia (an Internet destination recommended without hesitation to anyone with the slightest interest in horror) is running a Boris Karloff Blogathon all this week. Over 100 sites, including Classic-Horror.com, have pledged to make a Karloff-centric post between today, November 23rd and Sunday, November 29th. If you swing your gaze over to the site's sidebar, you'll notice a brand-new addition -- a badge that proudly proclaims that Classic-Horror.com has joined the League of Tana Tea Drinkers. The invitation came this morning and I accepted it almost instantly. But what is this mysterious organization sometimes known as LOTT-D? Is it a cult? Is it a conspiracy? Or is it something even more sinister -- a collective of the top horror bloggers on the Internet?!

The seventh annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards were announced last night during a special chat session over at the Classic Horror Film Board (no relation to Classic-Horror.com). Presenting the awards was the founder of the Rondos and owner of the CHFB, David Colton (known as taraco on the boards). Some of the attendees included Video Watchdog writers Tim Lucas and Shane M. Dallmann, Embodiment of Evil actor Raymond Castile, Cinema Suicide proprietor Bryan White, and many many more (read this as, if I'd thought about it, I'd totally have written some names down instead of relying on my frequently faulty memory). Proving that one controversial list deserves another, list-making impresario B-Sol, owner of the Vault of Horror blog, gathered together the Cyber-Horror Elite, a motley collection of horror bloggers and site-runners, for his most ambitious aggregation of diverse opinions yet -- the 2008 Cyber Horror Awards. The nineteen participating Elite voted in twelve different categories, each one named in honor of a person who had contributed greatly to horror in the past (e.g. the Bernard Herrmann Award for Best Musical Score and the Jamie Lee Curtis Award for Best Actress). About three weeks ago, the Vault of Horror blog owner B-Sol compiled the Top 50 Horror Films of All Time from the lists of thirty-two of the top horror bloggers and site owners (the "Cyber-Horror Elite"). The results were controversial, to say the least, although that was anticipated. One of the major points of discussion was that the list skewed towards older horror -- only 10% of the list came from the 1990s and 2000s. With that in mind, B-Sol regathered the Elite (with new additions) and embarked upon a new poll, this time to determine the 25 best horror films made since 1990.

The results of the poll, compiled from the lists of twenty-six contributors, were published on Saturday. The top five are below, followed by a link to the full list:(read more...)

Over at The Vault of Horror (a blog of which I was previously unaware, much to my personal shame), the cheekily named "Cyber-Horror Elite," a gathering of thirty-two of the top horror critics and bloggers from across the web, have put together a list of the Top 50 Horror Films. Each of the participants were asked to submit a ranked Top 10, which Vault owner B-Sol then compiled into the resulting list of fifty. Among those who added their input: John Kenneth Muir (critic and author of numerous tomes on the genre), Brad Miska (editor of Bloody-Disgusting), Stacie Ponder (the Final Girl), and Max Cheney (the Drunken Severed Head).(read more...)

Sure, the Oscars are important, but they hardly ever honor horror films. The Scream Awards are fine, but they're geared toward modern horror. What's a classic horror fan to do? Luckily, there's the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards (or the "Rondos"), put together by David Colton over at the Classic Horror Film Board (no relation to Classic-Horror.com). Each year, classic horror fans nominate dozens of horror/sci-fi/fantasy films, television shows, DVDs, magazines, books, and websites to win a handsomely sculpted bust of horror actor Rondo Hatton.
