Rondo Winners for 2008 Announced

The seventh annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards were announced last night during a special chat session over at the Classic Horror Film Board (no relation to Classic-Horror.com). Presenting the awards was the founder of the Rondos and owner of the CHFB, David Colton (known as taraco on the boards). Some of the attendees included Video Watchdog writers Tim Lucas and Shane M. Dallmann, Embodiment of Evil actor Raymond Castile, Cinema Suicide proprietor Bryan White, and many many more (read this as, if I'd thought about it, I'd totally have written some names down instead of relying on my frequently faulty memory). Tribute Video: Universal Monsters

Under my vidder alias "Jetpack Monkey", I recently created a fanvid for Universal's classic monster movies, set to Rob Thomas's "Ever the Same." I chose the song because I wanted something modern and poppy to create a juxtaposition with the Gothic imagery (in point of fact, I really kind of hate the song). I've embedded it below.

Original Universal "Mummy" Getting Special Edition DVD

Mummy 1932 Special Edition

Karl Freund's 1932 classic The Mummy, featuring Boris Karloff and Zita Johann, will be released in a 2-Disc Special Edition DVD set on July 8th, 2008, as part of the Universal Legacy Series. The set comes out just a month before the theatrical release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (a sequel to Stephen Sommers' 1999 Mummy remake). According to DVDTimes.co.uk, Freund's original will be presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio with the soundtrack in mono. No word yet on whether these will under go any further restoration/remastering like the recent 75th Anniversary editions of Dracula and Frankenstein. (read more...)

In 1932, Universal released its first horror film after Frankenstein. It was titled Murders in the Rue Morgue and it was loosely based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe. Murders in the Rue Morgue was the second film that Universal released starring Bela Lugosi. Bela Lugosi plays the mad scientist Dr. Mirakle. Dr. Mirakle works at a carnival in Paris with a giant gorilla named Erik. Mirakle uses his sideshow to promote his own theories of evolution. At night he kidnaps a young street girl and injects her with Erik's blood to test his theories, she dies from the experiment. Dr. Mirakle kills several women for his experiments.(read more...)
