The Week in Classic Horror: March 14 - 20, 2009

I'm trying something new this week that will hopefully become a regular feature. Too often I read some really interesting blog post or news snippet and think to myself, "Gosh, the readers at Classic-Horror would dig this," only to be waylaid by the follow-up, "Yeah, but think of all the text regurgitation you'll have to do just to make it a proper news story." The actual news copy is the part I struggle with the most, so instead, I'm doing a weekly round-up of links to posts that I find noteworthy.(read more...)

New "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Trailer

My Bloody Valentine 3D poster

I wouldn't say that I'm excited about Patrick Lussier's My Bloody Valentine 3D, but I'm certainly intrigued. The 3D hook definitely sets it apart from other horror films coming out over the next few months. Let's just say I plan to be there opening weekend, which is actually something I don't do that often with new horror.(read more...)

Rob Zombie Tackling "Halloween" Sequel

H2 Poster

Variety is reporting that Rob Zombie will return to write and direct the sequel to his 2007 remake of Halloween, titled H2. This confirms a report made by ShockTillYouDrop.com earlier this month. Although Zombie had stated in the past that he had no interest in a sequel, he has apparently changed his mind, stating, "I was so burned out. [But] I took a long break, made a record and I got excited again." STYD notes that Tyler Mane is set to return as Michael Myers, but otherwise no casting is in place.(read more...)

Update on Twisted Pictures' Remakes of Val Lewton Chillers

The Body Snatcher poster

It's been nearly a year and a half since news came in about the option that Twisted Pictures (the genre arm of Evolution Entertainment) had picked up to produce remakes of four RKO chillers -- three based on films produced by Val Lewton and one unknown. Up until recently, we had very little news beyond that announcement, but thankfully some more information has come to light. Thansk to Variety.com, the fourth property is now known -- and it is not a Val Lewton film, nor is it horror.(read more...)

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs) is close to sealing a deal to write and direct Dimension's planned remake of Clive Barker's 1987 horror movie Hellraiser. Laugier described the remake as "a dream project" and promised that he would not betray Barker's original vision. The original Hellraiser deals with an unfaithful wife who kills to supply her brother-in-law/lover with the blood he needs to reconstitute his body after it was ripped apart by a group of demons known as the Cenobites.(read more...)

Eisner will be working from a script by Ray Wright (Pulse '06) and Scott Kosar (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '03). Romero will act as executive producer. The original film dealt with an insanity-causing virus infecting a small town, and the brutal tactics used by the governement to contain the outbreak.(read more...)

Kent Nichols and Doug Sarine (Killer Tomatoes remake) interview

Kent Nichols and Doug Sarine

It's not often you find yourself excited about the prospect of an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes remake. But that's where I am now, after spending some time at San Diego Comic-Con talking to remake writers Kent Nichols (who will also direct) and Doug Sarine. You may have seen their work before -- they're the duo responsible for the wildly popular and hilarious web series Ask a Ninja, where a masked master of the martial arts answers viewer questions with as much violence and quick-cutting as possible.(read more...)

The new movie will simply be titled Plan 9 and it has the blessing of surviving cast member Conrad Brooks.(read more...)

Pics: Benicio del Toro as "The Wolf Man"

Benicio del Toro as The Wolf Man #1

Entertainment Weekly has posted an interview with makeup effects wizard Rick Baker on their website, where they discuss the ins and outs of making Benicio del Toro into a werewolf for Universal's remake of their 1941 classic The Wolf Man. Accompanying the interview are two sweet pictures of del Toro in makeup. I have to say, at least they have the look down -- there's a clear lineage from the old school look, but it's been updated to utilize modern sensibilities and techniques.
