Shocktober 2007: Lucio Fulci Week

Shocktober 2007: Lucio Fulci

Each week in October this year, as part of our Shocktober Classics event, we'll be featuring a different director who has significantly contributed to the horror genre, with new reviews for that director's films from Monday to Friday of that week. For the third week of October, we turn our gaze to Lucio Fulci, popularly referred to as "The Godfather of Gore."

Fulci began his film career working as a screenwriter before graduating to director with the Toto comedy I Ladri (The Thieves) in 1959. Although he filmed movies of many different genres throughout his 32-year career, he is best known for his horror films. His early efforts in the genre (including 1969's Perversion Story, 1971's A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, and 1972's Don't Torture a Duckling) were frequently mystery-thrillers in the giallo tradition, with only the occasional use of gore effects.(read more...)

Review: A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971)

A Lizard in a Woman's Skin poster

After the success of Dario Argento’s brilliant giallo The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, the Italian film industry mobilized to produce a veritable bestiary of thrillers with animal-oriented titles, as if somehow that was the reason for Plumage’s box office numbers. One of the first imitators was Lucio Fulci’s A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin. Despite the similarity in titling, however, Fulci’s film is a distinct entity, with its very own illogical plot and inability to overcome its own inconsistencies.(read more...)

Review: Eyes of a Stranger (1981)

Eyes of a Stranger poster

Ken Wiederhorn’s Eyes of a Stranger is a calculated rehashing of moments from better movies, strung together by the thinnest of plots. It’s such a waste of time that reading about it (and, to my chagrin, writing about it) is a fairly worthless pursuit. If you have the time on your hands and nothing better to do, then please continue through the review. Otherwise, everything you need to know is in that first sentence.(read more...)

Shocktober 2007: Wes Craven Week

Shocktober 2007: Wes Craven

Each week in October this year, as part of our Shocktober Classics event, we'll be featuring a different director who has significantly contributed to the horror genre, with new reviews for that director's films from Monday to Friday of that week. Our next master, Wes Craven, probably needs no introduction. Instead, we'll be posting a full biography for him in our Masters section on Saturday, October 12th. It should be sufficient to note that Craven has directed a number of the best and best-known horror films, including Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream.

Robert Englund to Direct Film Based on "The Viy", In Talks with Christopher Lee

Robert Englund

Fangoria has some really interesting news regarding Robert Englund's next project. He'll be directing an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's short story "The Viy". Gogol's tale served as Mario Bava's main inspiration for Black Sunday. Englund told Fangoria that he hoped to convince horror icon Christopher Lee to star in the film, which begins filming in Italy next month.

New "Friday the 13th" Confirmed to Be a Remake

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the upcoming Friday the 13th film from Platinum Dunes will be a remake, in a manner of speaking. The film, written by the Freddy vs. Jason team of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, will focus squarely on Jason Voorhees, who will wear his infamous hockey mask as he stalks the campgrounds of Crystal Lake. As you may recall, Jason barely features in the original Friday the 13th and he doesn't acquire the mask until Friday the 13th Part 3. From the sound of it, this is more of a franchise reboot a la Casino Royale rather than a strict remake.(read more...)
