Genius Products and The Weinstein Company have sent us the full specifications for the two-disc special edition of Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, coming out September 18th, 2007. Death Proof, the second half of the retro double feature Grindhouse, follows a creepy stunt driver whose taste for stalking lovely young ladies gets him into big trouble when he tangles with the wrong gang of badass babes. Their confrontation escalates to an extended mano-a-mano car chase with one of the girls strapped to the hood of a thundering Dodge Challenger.

Rob Zombie's "Halloween" Breaks Labor Day Box Office Record

Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween (read our review) took the record for highest gross over the four-day Labor Day weekend, pulling in an estimated $31 million. The previous record was held by Transporter 2 in 2005 with just $20.1 million. Additionally, Halloween's three-day take of $26.5 million is the largest opening for a horror/suspense-thriller this year, beating 1408 and Disturbia. Halloween, released by The Weinstein Company and MGM, opened on 4,100 screens in 3,472 theaters on Friday, August 31st.

It would be best to consider writer-director Rob Zombie's remake of John Carpenter's Halloween as a separate entity from its progenitor, allowing Zombie's film the space to create its own identity in the annals of horror. Unfortunately, Zombie can't appear to let go of the original, filling his film with references, duplicated shots and sequences, even as he tries to forge his own version of the tale. The result is equal parts Rob Zombie, Rob Zombie emulating John Carpenter, and Rob Zombie attempting to "fix" John Carpenter, a list which runs in order from what works best (although hardly perfectly) to what doesn't work at all.

With director Adam Green’s slasher film coming out in limited release on Friday, September 7th, now's as good as time as any to meet the Hatchet fodder: those poor innocent (and not-so-innocent) victims who take a Louisiana swamp tour right into the clutches of mutilated killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). Hammer Horror Is Back... Sort Of

The Unofficial Hammer Films website broke the news that Hammer Films is set to start filming its first feature-length movie since 1976's To the Devil a Daughter. Titled Beyond the Rave, the new film appears to be about vampires in the rave/clubbing subculture. Rick Warden ("Band of Brothers") has been cast in the role of vampire Strigoli. Cameras roll on September 15th. There are indications that the movie will be released as both a full-length film and also broken up into 20 segments for dissemination on the Internet and mobile phones.(read more...)

"Buffy" Spin-Off "Ripper" Is More Likely Than Ever

At Collectormania Glasgow, attendee Anthony Stewart Head told SyFyPortal that "Ripper", the long-rumored BBC series featuring his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" character Rupert Giles, may finally be a go. While certain rights issues still stand in the way -- the BBC still has to get clearance from "Buffy" owner Fox -- they are apparently keen to do the series at this point. Kevin Smith's "Red State" Written

Kevin Smith told NewsAskew.com that the first draft of his upcoming horror-thriller Red State has been completed. According to Smith, it's the shortest script he's ever written in terms of page count, with the least amount of dialogue. "Unlike any other script I’ve ever authored, to say the least," Smith wrote. "Very f**ked up. If I’d never said anything about it in the press and put it out under a pseudonym, I doubt anyone would ever connect me with it."

Smith has been tight-lipped about the details of the plot, although he has compared it to The Shining in terms of mood.
