Plan 9 from Outer Space poster

Bloody-Disgusting posted the news that Darkstone Entertainment is putting together a remake of famed bad director Edward D. Wood, Jr's magnum opus Plan 9 from Outer Space in celebration of that film's 50th Anniversary. The new movie will simply be titled Plan 9 and it has the blessing of surviving cast member Conrad Brooks.(read more...)

Review: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978

Remaking a classic can be a daunting prospect. The new film will be scrutinized not only by moviegoers and critics, but by people making exacting comparisons between it and the original version. A director must be careful to respect and honor the original film, while at the same time offering a new and fresh take on an already familiar story. On these terms, Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of Don Siegel’s 1956 masterpiece Invasion of the Body Snatchers succeeds magnificently. It does credit to the original while crafting an exquisite experience of terror and paranoia. This wonderful film is a must see of 1970s horror cinema.(read more...)

No Classic Horror DVDs From Universal This Fall?

Over at the Classic Horror Film Board (no relation to Classic-Horror.com), Jim Clatterbaugh reports that he spoke with a representative over at Universal, who stated that the studio had no plans to release classic horror DVDs this year (excepting the upcoming Special Edition of The Mummy). Apparently, it's past the time to begin planning such a release, as they are already working on their 2009 schedule.(read more...)

Review: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

Abominable Dr. Phibes poster

"Nine killed her; nine shall die! Eight have died, soon to be nine. Nine eternities in doom!" If that sort of beautifully over-the-top line doesn't bring warmth to your heart, you might as well turn back now. You will not enjoy The Abominable Dr. Phibes, a brilliant piece of moody, camp horror from 1971. You will not bask in the glory of Phibes's twisted wonderland of murder and revenge. However, if you can feel the cockles of your heart stirring with anticipation, you are in for a beautiful treat.(read more...)

Petition to Get Makeup Guru Jack Pierce a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Jack P. Pierce

Thanks to Mark Shostrom for the heads-up on this one. John "The Unimonster" Stevenson has posted a petition online, asking the executives at Universal Studios to fund a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame for makeup guru Jack Pierce. Pierce created the legendary designs for Frankenstein's Monster, Ardath Bey, and The Wolf Man, before getting unsummarily booted during the studio's transition to Universal-International in the late 1940s.(read more...)

Review: Jack the Ripper (1976)

Jack the Ripper poster

Many attempts have been made to dramatize the tale of Jack the Ripper, but Jesus Franco's 1976 effort into the subject proves to be one of the best. Our killer is given a sense of duality and warped motivations that surpass those provided to him in other treatments and some of the camera work and direction is impressively well planned and executed. However - though it may be one of the better attempts at the subject matter in general - certain internal issues, like limp acting, steal some vital impact from the film and manage to hold it back from being a full-fledged classic.(read more...)

Review: Frightmare (1974)

Frightmare 1974 poster

Pete Walker's Frightmare appears to have been made primarily to shock the common British public of 1974; in many ways, it's nothing more than series of grotesqueries strung along a thin thread of plot. Thirty-four years later, however, its power to achieve its primary goal has diminished significantly. The ever-increasing desensitization of movie audience puts a movie like Frightmare at significant risk of obsolescence. Thankfully, Frightmare is buoyed by a delightful morbid streak, as well as a command performance by actress Sheila Keith. Although time has sapped the film's intended horror, it's not a bad little flick to put on when you need to darken an abominably cheery day.(read more...)

Warner to Release More Classic Horror on DVD in Q4

Beast with Five Fingers poster

This is apparently ancient news (from February), but I completely missed it. I'm posting it now in case anybody else shares my lack of timeliness. As part of a press release about Warner Bros.'s 85th Birthday, Warner Home Video announced that a new classic horror box set would be forthcoming in the fourth quarter of this year (between October and December).(read more...)
