Too many film critics find joy in bashing Steven Spielberg. I am not an ardent fan of his, but his genius and love of cinema exceed the majority of those in Hollywood. Anyone who can claim directorial rights to Jaws, Schindler's List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T. is, to put it mildly, okay in my book. And yes, I have seen several of his films, and I have enjoyed many. But to truly appreciate Spielberg's talents, one should visit his 1971 closet classic Duel. Released as a television movie and produced on a shoestring budget in two weeks, Duel resonates with the sparks of genius that have lit the fire illuminating Spielberg's Hollywood journey.(read more...)

When someone asks me about Jesus (Jess) Franco, the two movies I recommend they go out and pick up are Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed In Ecstasy. Franco is a very uneven director and while I've viewed and enjoyed the majority of his output, I realize that I'm in the minority. Both of the aforementioned films are completely accessible and truly show what a creative genius Franco could be when he is at the top of his form. Both also star the lovely and quite talented Soledad Miranda (who would star in two other Franco releases), and she is certainly the main reason to watch both films.(read more...)

Review: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 (1997)

Flip to any review of a television series with a strong female lead, any critical paper on modern pop culture, or any list of the top 10 television series of the 1990s, and you'll find the curiously incongruous title "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sitting there. One television show has dug its tendrils into the world and squeezed for all its worth - and done it all while airing on the "lesser" networks of the WB and UPN. It's really not hard to see why - well-defined characters spouting clever dialogue in a world rich with its own mythology from which endless plots can be spun when the characters aren't busy spinning them on their own.

Well-made horror is only too rare these days, but well-made horror made with only one screen shot is virtually an impossibility -- that is, until Open Water came around. Open Water has been defined as “Blair Witch Meets Jaws.“ This seemingly accurate description is actually quite a discredit. Open Water has the best qualities of both films, but blew both of them away in the suspense department through just a touch of courage.(read more...)

Last week was officially the Week of Website Launches. Not only did the official website for the two upcoming Return of the Living Dead sequels (Necropolis and Rave to the Grave, both of which I am equally excited about) and the new, improved Amityville Horror remake website make their first appearances, but also, the much-anticipated Georgearomero.com was relaunched with a completely new look and some oddly-placed photos of George A. Romero Xbox and iPod skins, both of which (mark my words) I WILL own, if and when they become available to zombie lovers such as myself. "The Manson Family" Coming to DVD April 26th

Certainly the best news of the last two weeks for me has been the following: The Manson Family is arriving on a 2-disc DVD set on April 26th. For those that haven't heard, The Manson Family is supposedly one of the most disturbing portrayals of Charles Manson's murders ever filmed, and has been in production for fifteen years (!!!!). That and the soundtrack totally rips, as it features an entire catalog of Phil Anselmo-related bands such as Superjoint Ritual and Necrophagia.(read more...)

Harryhausen Speaks Out!

Out of all of the film special effect concoctors that have existed throughout the span of time so far, it is Ray Harryhausen who I respect the most, due to his completely unsurpassed originality and creativity. So naturally, when he talks, I listen. Or in this case, read, as the website for Now Playing magazine has just posted a new interview with the stop-motion magician himself, in which the man puts into words his views on Peter Jackson's upcoming King Kong remake, all of with which I couldn't agree more. Review: Near Dark (1987)

Since Near Dark's release in 1987, the lore surrounding this innovative vampire Western has evolved impressively. Many cinephiles, including horror fans and their brethren from other camps, consider Near Dark an underground classic. Nothing I can write here in this review can enhance or undermine its legendary status. But as I watched this film for the first time, I must admit I'm not even sure I liked it. But I was sure I was viewing something profoundly unique.(read more...)

…okay, I lied. None of this is "magic", with the exception of Rottweiler and maybe Creep and The Nun (notice, the only exceptions are the independent films). Everything else listed here looks, and this is purely from viewing the trailers, like feces. I felt the need to include this, however, to illustrate the point made in the beginning of this column. Yeah, go ahead…watch it. See what I mean?
