The 2009 International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Fest Starts Thursday!

International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival 2009

One of the highlights of the Phoenix horror scene is the annual International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival. This year's iteration runs October 15-18, 2009, at MADCAP Theaters, the festival's new home in downtown Tempe. Running the show once again is Andrea Beesley-Brown, the Midnite Movie Mamacita, and she's put together an amazing line-up of features and shorts. The IHSFFF opens on Thursday, October 15th with a 7:15PM screening of one of my favorite underrated sci-fi action flicks, Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers (1997). Star Casper Van Dien, Johnny Rico himself, will be in attendance, answering questions after the movie and then signing autographs in the lobby (all proceeds from Van Dien's signing go to Childhelp USA).(read more...)

Pictures from the Phoenix First Friday Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt

Zombies Walk

Last Friday, during Phoenix's monthly First Friday Artswalk, the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival and the AZ Ghostbusters teamed up to throw a Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt. The turn-out was excellent, with some really creative zombies and ghouls on display (including the Frankenstein monster and his bride!). Classic-Horror was on hand, taking pictures and tabulating scores. The best of our pictures can be seen in the slideshow below:(read more...)

Phoenix Comicon 2009: Zombie Events

Zombie Walk #2

The 2009 Phoenix Comicon is over; the last of the attendees has stumbled away from the Mesa Convention Center, heavy with trade paperbacks, collectibles, and anime DVDs procured on the convention floor. This was my first year at the convention -- in the past, my own experience with such events was limited to San Diego's massive Comic-Con International, which annually boasts more con-goers than my old hometown of Davenport, Iowa had people.(read more...)

The 2009 Phoenix Comicon is this weekend at the Mesa Convention Center and Classic-Horror.com will be there. "Repo! The Genetic Opera" to Slice Its Way to the Phoenix Area

Repo! The Genetic Opera poster

Classic-Horror.com is based out of Phoenix, AZ, so occasionally we provide horror news specific to that region. The big genre news for the Valley of the Sun right now is that at 10:00PM on December 4th, 2008, Chandler Cinemas in Chandler, AZ will be host a special, one-night-only screening of Repo The Genetic Opera with director Darren Lynn Bousman and screenwriter/composer Terrance Zdunich in attendance. This is part of a special four-city expansion of Repo's highly successful tour of independent cinemas across the United States.(read more...)

Alejandro Jodorowsky Double Feature in Chandler, AZ

Holy Mountain poster

If you live in the Phoenix area (as I do), then Chandler Cinemas has an extremely interesting double feature this weekend. On November 21st and 22nd, audiences can experience the bizarro one-two punch of Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo (1970) and Holy Mountain (1973). I'll let the press release do the talking, however, since they sum up the draw for both films far better than I could.(read more...)

Cult Movies in the Phoenix Area Every Weekend in September

Classic-Horror.com is based out of Phoenix, AZ, so occasionally we'll be providing horror news that is specific to that region. In this case, we wanted to give everyone the heads-up that the Midnite Movie Mamacita, a local cult movie advocate who hosts screenings of classic grindhouse cinema here in the Valley, has an amazing slate of strange cinema lined up for her Reels of Fury event, going on every Friday and Saturday in September at the Chandler Cinemas (2140 N. Arizona Ave, Chandler, AZ 85224).(read more...)
