Disheartened by a conversation he overheard at his local video rental store, graphic designer Eric Slager felt that word needed to get out on the awesomeness that is Vincent Price. So he created an awesome poster that presents the titles of some of Price's greatest works in the shape of the actor's face, garnished with his meticulously coiffed hair and waxed moustache. You can read the whole story at Slager's blog. It's a really cool piece of art for which we are happy to boost the signal.

I grew up on two kinds of horror movies: Universal creature features and Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe films. I have very specific memories of watching Vincent Price going mad in Pit and the Pendulum and cheering on the magic duel in The Raven. These are formative experiences in my life as a film aficionado, so when Jose Cruz decided to devote a month of his Cold Reads column to celebrating Poe's short stories, I felt it was the right time to pay tribute to the cinematic triumvirate of Corman, Price, and Poe.

I am Nate Yapp, author of the website article you are about to read. I feel obligated to warn you that some of the sensations, some of the physical reactions which the writers on the site will feel discussing Sony's upcoming William Castle Film Collection will also be experienced, for the first time in Classic-Horror.com history, by certain members of the reading audience. I say "certain members" because some people are more sensitive to the potential awesomeness of a William Castle box set than others. These fortunate people will feel a strange, tingling sensation when they hear that the set will contain 13 Ghosts, Homicidal, Strait-Jacket, The Tingler, Mr. Sardonicus, and, making their DVD debuts, 13 Frightened Girls, The Old Dark House (1963), and Zotz!  Some will feel it less strongly than others, but only because I forgot to add that the full-length documentary Spine Tingler! Rob Zombie's always been a very Internet-friendly director, posting tidbits about his projects to his MySpace as he works. His approach to H2, the sequel to his 2007 remake of Halloween, is no different. This morning he posted a black-and-white picture of Bill Moseley done up as his character, horror host Uncle Seymour Coffins, and classic horror fans may note that his make-up and costume seem quite familiar. Read on to see what I mean.

One of the many constants on the Exhibition Floor is Artists' Alley, a section dedicated to independent artists. Offerings in this section are mostly comic-book related, but can range from the beautiful to the bizarre. It is in this section of the exhibit floor where we find our Comic-Con Experience 2008 #4, artist Robert Aragon.

While many artists in Artists' Alley have horror-themed offerings, Aragon's pieces are one-of-a-kind tributes to classic horror films, with a particular emphasis on Universal and Hammer. Aragon licenses the likeness of many of his subjects from the actor's estates, including those of Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney, and his art accurately and artistically captures the spirit and images of the old films. You'll find no grotesque, trendily warped images of Dracula or the Mummy here, no modern gothic influences. After all, Boris Karloff's Frankenstein's Monster needs no embellishment.(read more...)

On September 9th, 2008, Fox Home Video will release "Fox Horror Classics, Volume 2", a three-disc box set of classic thrillers featuring Chandu the Magician, Dr. Renault's Secret, and Dragonwyck. The set will have a suggested retail price of $19.98. Each film in the set will have a number of special features, including featurettes, still galleries, and restoration comparisons. Fox Home Video will be releasing three long-awaited 1940s horror-thrillers onto DVD in time for Halloween. According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, we can expect to see The Lodger (1944), Hangover Square (1944), and The Undying Monster (1942) on shelves around October 9th, 2007. Curiously, these films are being marketed with Vincent Price's name attached, although his connections to them are tenuous -- he appeared in none of them, but did narrate or perform in radio versions of the same stories. DVD Drive-In has the scoop on MGM's upcoming Vincent Price and Roger Corman box sets. The Price set is being advertised as part of MGM's "Scream Legends Collection", which indicates we could see more box sets of a similar nature in the future. Films in the set include The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, Tales of Terror, Twice-Told Tales, Theatre of Blood, Madhouse, and the new special edition of The Witchfinder General. An extras disc will contain a documentary ("Vincent Price: Renaissance Man") and two featurettes ("The Art of Fear" and "Working with Vincent Price"). DVD Drive-In has more details on Fox Home Video's upcoming The Fly Collection. The box set, which will contain The Fly (1958), The Return of the Fly (1959), and (for the first time ever on home video in the US) The Curse of the Fly (1965). Additionally, DVD Drive-In has learned that David Hedison, star of The Fly, has recorded a commentary track for that film, moderated by David Del Valle of FilmsInReview.com. Del Valle said of the commentary: “David Hedison was in fine form for the duration of the taping. He had not seen the film for years so it was a fresh approach for him and he had fun with it. It was interesting to watch him look at himself as he appeared on film half a century ago.” In addition to the commentary track, the set will include two new featurettes -- one on the making of the films and another on Vincent Price, who co-starred in The Fly and The Return of the Fly.(read more...)

Michael Reeves' 1968 horror film Witchfinder General (also known as The Conqueror Worm) will finally be coming to DVD in the USA, according to DVD Drive-in. The film follows Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Price) as a man who preys on the superstitions of 17th Century England, torturing "witches" for a fee. The new DVD will contain Reeves' director's cut of the film, as well as the original score by Paul Ferris, which had been replaced in all previous US video editions of the film. Producer Phillip Waddilove and actor Ian Oglivy have recorded a commentary for the release, and Waddilove's personal collection of production stills will be included as well.(read more...)
