Review: Bad Ronald (1974)

Between 1969 and 1975, the television network ABC was king of the TV movie scene, running up to two movie-of-the-week series at a time, supplemented by the occasional miniseries event. Tales of horror accounted for roughly 20% of these. The shorter running time (75 minutes or less) and lower production values were perfect for concise chillers that might have strained to fill the scope of a theatrical feature. Bad Ronald, which originally aired October 23rd, 1974, has that kind of a story - a quirky bit of creepiness that succeeds in its general aim to entertain and thrill in the same way a fast food cheeseburger succeeds in satisfying hunger.(read more...)

Scream for Your Very Lives! The William Castle Film Collection is Loose on DVD on October 20th!

I am Nate Yapp, author of the website article you are about to read. I feel obligated to warn you that some of the sensations, some of the physical reactions which the writers on the site will feel discussing Sony's upcoming William Castle Film Collection will also be experienced, for the first time in Classic-Horror.com history, by certain members of the reading audience. I say "certain members" because some people are more sensitive to the potential awesomeness of a William Castle box set than others. These fortunate people will feel a strange, tingling sensation when they hear that the set will contain 13 Ghosts, Homicidal, Strait-Jacket, The Tingler, Mr. Sardonicus, and, making their DVD debuts, 13 Frightened Girls, The Old Dark House (1963), and Zotz! Some will feel it less strongly than others, but only because I forgot to add that the full-length documentary Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story will also be included.(read more...)

Trailer and Pictures for Universal's "The Wolfman"

Universal has released the trailer for their upcoming remake The Wolfman to Yahoo! Movies. Well, they call it a trailer. I call it a plot summary. While it's exhilarating to see so much of the original 1941 The Wolf Man in place (Larry Talbot having an American accent, the gypsy woman, the Welsh setting), it also feels like all of the elements that are new to this version have been spelled out. I won't divulge what these new elements are, in deference to those who avoid the trailer to remain unspoiled. (read more...)

Tribute Video: Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein

This weekend I'm at Vividcon, a Chicago-based convention devoted to the art of fanvidding. Just a few hours ago, my latest concoction, a tribute to the Hammer Frankenstein series, debuted and I think it was pretty well received. Set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now," the video is a slightly cheeky ode to mad science and the greatest of all mad scientists, Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein. I've embedded the vid below. "Mad Monster Party" Special Edition DVD Coming Sept. 8

Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release a new special edition of Rankin-Bass's horror-themed animated movie Mad Monster Party on September 8th, 2009, according to DVDActive. The DVD, which has a suggested retail price of $14.98, will include a featurette (Groovy Ghouls: The Making of Mad Monster Party), the theatrical trailer, and two sing-alongs.

Baron Von Frankenstein (voice of Boris Karloff) has decided to retire as the head of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters. But first, he must inform the other monsters about his plans. How to deliver the news? How else - through a Mad Monster Party! Von Frankenstein’s guests include a who’s who of Halloween favorites, including The Werewolf, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Mummy, The Invisible Man and more. But who among them is fit to be the new head of the monsters?

Classic-Horror.com Podcast #1

Call this an interesting experiment. A few months ago, I had a notion to start up a regular podcast for Classic-Horror.com. To that end, I bought the necessary equipment and audio software, rang up my good buddy Tenebrous Kate, and recorded what you might call a "pilot episode." Although Kate and I had a lot of fun, the post-production turned out to be a pain (let's just say that this recording took place more than two months ago), so this is likely to be a very irregular feature. Review: Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971)

What a glorious mish-mash this is! Dracula vs. Frankenstein began life as Satan's Bloody Freaks, a standard mad science flick featuring J. Carrol Naish as a mad scientist and Lon Chaney, Jr as his faithful servant. However, the completed film was not to the liking of producer/co-writer Samuel M. Sherman, and the movie went back into production to add new scenes with Dracula and the Frankenstein Monster. However, the new ending didn't have the "punch" that Sherman wanted, so a new one was shot with a different actor in the Monster's makeup. Calabrese Music Video Features First Released Footage from "The Graves"

The new music video for punk band Calabrese's "Vampires Don't Exist" contains a bonus for horror fans -- the first released footage from Brian Pulido's upcoming film, The Graves. "We'll launch The Graves official trailer on July 20th, right before Comic-Con International, but we wanted to give everyone a sneak peek," says Pulido, who both wrote and directed the film. "We feature Calabrese early on in The Graves and this video is a natural extension of that scene." The video, which is posted on the official YouTube page for The Graves at http://www.youtube.com/thegravesmovie, features footage of horror icons like Tony Todd and Bill Moseley, as well as other stars of the film.
