Happy 80th Birthday, Jesus Franco

Put up the banners and bring out the cake! Prolific and oft-misunderstood genre auteur Jesus Franco, the man behind The Awful Dr. Orlof, The Diabolical Dr. Z, Venus in Furs, and Vampyros Lesbos, becomes an octagenarian today. In his eighty years of life, he's directed nearly 200 films, often writing, acting, and composing the musical score as well. Sure, he's reviled as a hack in some circles, but a number of critics (including the inestimable Tim Lucas) have also sung his praises. You can count me among his fans, as well. His films are like free-form jazz, played by a distractable genius who hasn't discovered Ritalin yet -- and I mean that as praise. There are moments, sublime moments, in some of Franco's films that simply cannot be found with any other director. He's a treasure and I'm happy to hear that he's still going. Feliz cumpleaños, Jesus.

I'm breaking the site's hiatus briefly to help my good friends over at Trash City Entertainment spread the word about the Phoenix Fear Film Festival, taking place January 23rd, 2010 at Madcap Theaters (730 S Mill Ave in Tempe, Arizona). Five features and eleven short films will haunt the screens through the course of the day. Special guests scream queen Tiffany Shepis and slasher star Nick Principe (Chrome Skull in Laid to Rest) will be on hand, as well as musical acts Fancy Pants, Count Smokula, and Thunderstump.(read more...)

Word has reached us from the Latarnia forums that Jacinto Molina, better known to the horror world as actor-writer-director Paul Naschy, died on November 30th, 2009, after a year-long struggle with cancer. He was 75. Naschy broke onto the horror scene in 1968 with La marca del Hombre-lobo (known as Frankenstein's Bloody Terror in the United States), which introduced to the world his most lasting creation, the troubled lycanthrope Waldemar Daninsky. He would play Daninsky over a dozen times in the course of his career. He would also tackle such characters as Dr. Jekyll, Dracula, the Phantom of the Opera, Quasimodo, Frankenstein's monster, and Satan himself.(read more...)

Three Horror Classics Screening at Landmark Loew's Jersey City This Weekend

Landmark Loew's Jersey theater in Jersey City, NJ has some exciting screenings lined up for this coming weekend, starting October 23rd at 8:00PM with a 35mm print of Brian DePalma's Carrie and continuing October 24th with a  showing of George Waggner's The Wolf Man at 4:00PM and then Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby at 7:30PM. Tickets are $6 per screening ($4 for seniors age 65 and older), but combo packages are available for those who want to take in multiple films. The 2009 International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Fest Starts Thursday!

One of the highlights of the Phoenix horror scene is the annual International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival. This year's iteration runs October 15-18, 2009, at MADCAP Theaters, the festival's new home in downtown Tempe. Running the show once again is Andrea Beesley-Brown, the Midnite Movie Mamacita, and she's put together an amazing line-up of features and shorts. The IHSFFF opens on Thursday, October 15th with a 7:15PM screening of one of my favorite underrated sci-fi action flicks, Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers (1997). Star Casper Van Dien, Johnny Rico himself, will be in attendance, answering questions after the movie and then signing autographs in the lobby (all proceeds from Van Dien's signing go to Childhelp USA).(read more...)

Reminder: Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt Tonight in Phoenix

Edited to give more accurate directions to the Scavenger Hunt registration. If you're in the Phoenix area and you're looking for something to do tonight, the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival is hosting a Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt as part of downtown's First Friday Arts Walk. Heck, even if you already have plans, drop 'em, because this is going to be a ton of fun.

The Zombie Walk will gather together at the Arizona Ghostbusters booth at 501 E. Roosevelt by Pravus Gallery and begin shambling at 7:00PM.

At the same time, registration for the Zombie Scavenger Hunt opens at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival Booth, which has been moved to Spot #40 in Vendor Village (Garfield St., east of 5th St). You can do both the Walk and the Scavenger Hunt, however, because the Hunt itself doesn't start until 8PM.

Remake Round-up: "The Fly", "The Crazies", "A Nightmare on Elm Street"

Three pieces of remake-related news for those interested. First off, apparently Fox's remake of David Cronenberg's The Fly is still happening, according to THR's Risky Business Blog, this time with Cronenberg himself attached as a writer (and possibly as a director). While this is an odd move for Cronenberg, whose seen greater box office success and mainstream acceptance since he switched from horror to crime thrillers, it's not completely befuddling. Cronenberg recently directed Howard Shore's recent opera version of The Fly, which played in Paris and Los Angeles. Maybe he still has insects on the brain.

Zombies Walk and Scavenge in Phoenix Next Friday

Calling all sharp-eyed shambling dead in the Phoenix area! Your services are required at the First Friday Arts Walk on October 2nd, 2009 for a Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt. Begin gathering en masse at 6:30PM at the Arizona Ghostbusters booth (501 E. Roosevelt by Pravus Gallery). At 7:00PM, the AZ Ghostbusters will lead the horde of the undead around the First Friday festivities, ending up at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival booth in the Vendor Village (Spot #98, on the east side of 5th Street, south of Garfield). There you can register your team of up to four zombies for the Second Annual Zombie Scavenger Hunt, in the hopes of winning the grand prize of four VIP passes to the 2009 International Horror and Sci-Fi Film, which runs October 15-18.
