Cold Reads: Psycho by Robert Bloch

Psycho by Robert Bloch

When Classic-Horror.com returns from its hiatus in May, we'll be featuring a number of regular columns tracking different aspects of the horror genre. Here's a preview of one such column, Jose Cruz's study of horror in literature, Cold Reads.

"Norman Bates heard the noise and a shock went through him." And so begins this timeless tale, a story that is guaranteed to send a few jolts of nervousness through your veins as well. Overshadowed by its celluloid counterpart, Psycho the book has all the creeping chills of the movie along with the great privilege of having Mr. Robert Bloch to guide us through the long, dark corridors of both the Bates house and the minds of its inhabitants.(read more...)

Pictures from the Phoenix First Friday Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt

Zombies Walk

Last Friday, during Phoenix's monthly First Friday Artswalk, the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival and the AZ Ghostbusters teamed up to throw a Zombie Walk and Scavenger Hunt. The turn-out was excellent, with some really creative zombies and ghouls on display (including the Frankenstein monster and his bride!). Classic-Horror was on hand, taking pictures and tabulating scores. The best of our pictures can be seen in the slideshow below:(read more...)

Shocktober Classics 2009: Staff Screams

Shocktober 2009 logo

Welcome to our annual October review event, the Shocktober Classics. In years past, we've shown our spotlight on great horror directors and foreign fright films. This year, we've letting the staff decide what they want to review, leading to an eclectic selection of titles, with something to please everybody. We'll be posting a new review every weekday throughout the month. We also have some great features lined up, including an interview with genre luminary Tom Atkins.

We've posted a hint about each day's review on the calendar below. As we post the reviews, the hint will be replaced by the appropriate link, so be sure to check back here throughout the month!(read more...)

Tribute Video: Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein

Curse of Frankenstein quad

This weekend I'm at Vividcon, a Chicago-based convention devoted to the art of fanvidding. Just a few hours ago, my latest concoction, a tribute to the Hammer Frankenstein series, debuted and I think it was pretty well received. Set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now," the video is a slightly cheeky ode to mad science and the greatest of all mad scientists, Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein. I've embedded the vid below. I hope you enjoy. (read more...)

Scenes from Comic-Con International 2009

Editor-in-Creep Nate Yapp Does His Best Kirk

Classic-Horror.com was in San Diego last weekend, attending Comic-Con International 2009. While we took it easier this year than last, we did catch some great pictures. Visit our Comic-Con 2009 gallery for the best moments captured from the world's largest pop culture convention.

Most pictures were taken by Erin Dow, with some by Julia Merriam and Nate Yapp.

The Classic-Horror.com team is on the ground at San Diego Comic-Con! We've been gathering great coverage for the past couple of days, including a talk with director Joe Dante, pictures from the convention floor, and all sorts of panel coverage. Keep an eye on Classic-Horror over the next few days as we post updates.

Welcome to Godzilla Week

Godzilla / Gojira

Here he comes, the King of Monsters, one of the great pop culture icons of all time, the one and only Godzilla. This giant lizard has been stomping around for the past fifty-five years, variably as villain, hero, and antihero. He's faced dozens of other monsters, from the benevolent Mothra to the world-conqueror King Ghidorah. He's been the subject of cartoons, pop songs, and a metric ton of collectible toys. This week, Classic-Horror.com has teamed up with The Sci-Fi Block to honor the big guy with a week of reviews. Each day this week, Monday through Friday, we'll post a new Godzilla review here at Classic-Horror, and a different review of the same film will go up over at SFB.

Theme Week: Reader's Choice

Back in December, we asked our readers to tell us which movies they'd like to see us review. We received a good number of responses and now, three months later, we've completed reviews for five of the requested movies. Which flicks made the final cut? You'll have to keep your eye on Classic-Horror for the next five days in order to find out. We'll be unveiling one title a day this week, starting Monday, March 9th and running through Friday, March 13th.(read more...)

Phoenix Comicon 2009: Horror Panels

Nate and Steve Ringgenberg at the Not Dead Yet Horror Classics panel

Apparently I know nothing of what a convention panel is supposed to look like. I'd always thought of them as marketing tools -- years of attending San Diego Comic-Con will do that. At Phoenix Comicon, however, the panels were more esoteric, devoted to actually fan discussion mixed with nostalgia. There were three panels devoted to horror movies -- one general horror panel, one on horror classics, and one (ostensibly) about horror comedy. I had the honor and joy of being asked to participate in the latter two.

Phoenix Comicon 2009: Zombie Events

Zombie Walk #2

The 2009 Phoenix Comicon is over; the last of the attendees has stumbled away from the Mesa Convention Center, heavy with trade paperbacks, collectibles, and anime DVDs procured on the convention floor. This was my first year at the convention -- in the past, my own experience with such events was limited to San Diego's massive Comic-Con International, which annually boasts more con-goers than my old hometown of Davenport, Iowa had people.(read more...)
